Abstract

Could you begin by contextualising VTT’s position within the applied research andtechnological landscape?

To create new knowledge, it is important that university-led blue sky research is conducted. However, it is also crucial to translate research findings to the marketplace for the benefit of the business world and, of course, for the whole of humankind. Research and technology organizations (RTOs) have an important role in this context; the interface between science and innovations are RTOs’ playground. For this reason, VTT has placed special effort to improve the capability of research in providing new cutting-edge technologies. I believe RTOs all over the world need to look into the future and create solutions. Our spearhead research programmes give us a special tool in this respect.

Much emphasis is placed on the multidisciplinary nature of the work undertaken at VTT. What particular benefits does this holistic approach afford you in terms of impact and speed to market?

Unlike many other RTOs, VTT has inhouse strength in multidisciplinary technologies. This allows us to evaluate and develop new systemic solutions and innovations in an efficient way. Out-of-thebox thinking is crucial to create disruptive innovations! We are radically combining traditional and new technologies and methods.

Impact and speed to market are what we are now focusing on.

How would you quantify the comparative importance of innovation to the Finnish economy and the wellbeing of Finnish citizens?

Export industries are extremely important for Finland. As a small country, we need to find niche areas in which we can maximise value creation. Finland mainly exports

products that have knowledge and high technology at their core. As the country has the highest basic education level in the EU, it would be a waste of resources not to utilise knowledge in our economy. Innovations bring growth and enable a wealthy economy.
