Pujiang Innovation Forum held in North America for the First Time

On May 16, 2017, Pujiang Innovation Forum-Canada Forum was successfully opened in Toronto ConventionCenter. It was held by Pujiang Innovation Forum, jointly held by Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science &Technology, P.R.C., Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality and Ontario Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science, Canada, with great support and joint efforts from Consulate General of the P.R.C. in Toronto. Xu Wei, Vice Consul General,ConsulateGeneral of the P.R.C. in Toronto, Ye Dongbai, Director of Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Science &Technology, P.R.C., Greg Wootton, Assistant Deputy Minister,Ontario Ministry of Research, Innovation and Scienceattended the forum and made opening remarks. Wu Yuanbin, Director ofDepartment of S&T for Social Development, Ministry of Science &Technology, P.R.C.andGreg Wootton, Assistant Deputy Minister, Ontario Ministry of Research attended unveiling ceremony of the inauguration of National Eastern Tech-Transfer CenterCanadaBranch Center was inaugurated. Dajin Luo, Director of Shanghai Institute for Science of Sciencechaired the forum. More than 150 delegates attended the forum, who were representatives from Chinese and Canadian government authorities, finance and investment world, universities and research institutes, clean-tech field, hi-tech parks and incubators, S&T agencies and the press. Themed on “Forging an eco-chain for clean technology cooperation”, the forum has invited Chinese and Canadian enterprises, tech-transfer platforms and research institutes for dialogue over science and innovation cooperation to help Shanghai build a global influence of science and technology innovation hub.

 

 

Pujiang Innovation Forum has been hosted by the Ministry of Science &Technology, P.R.C. and Shanghai Municipal People’s Government for 9 years consecutively. The 10th Forum will be held during Sep. 23-24, 2017 in Shanghai. This year, Pujiang Innovation Forum was heldin North America for the first time. The sub-forum has been held in Toronto with the aim of enhancing its international impact and promoting clean-tech industrial connection and cooperation. In recent years, Canada has possessed world-leading technology and industry in clean-tech, energy saving & environment protection, new material, etc. And clean-tech has long been valued as one of the core industries for Shanghai’s efforts to build itself into “global science and technology innovation hub”.  The interaction and sharing between China and Canada has facilitated innovation exchange and industry cooperation in clean-tech field and communication between two countries’ tech transfer & service agencies.

 

 

 

During the forum, BaoXinhe, Executive Vice President of Fudan University and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a speech on the trend of energy storage technology in China. Lora Field, adviser to Ontario Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science, and Professor Robert Morris from University of Toronto presented clean-tech and energy storage technologies in Ontario Province respectively. On the investor’s side, Tang Mingyu, Executive Director at FOSUN Group, introduced investment clean-tech technology in China and Fosun's overseas investment strategy as representative of Chinese enterprises. Another investor Nicholas Parker, the founder of CleanTech Group and CEO of Gap Incubation Fund, talked about global clean-tech development and investment opportunities facing both China and Canada. Yan Mingfeng,  CEO of National Eastern Tech-Transfer Center, elaborated on the tech-transfer trends of diversification and internationalization from the perspective of government’s fourth-party platform.

 

 

Two supporting activities were held during the sub-forum, namely China –Canada Energy Storage Forum&China - Canada Innovation Business Cooperation Exchange (B2B)In the B2B event, over 40 Canadian environment enterprises, investment organizations and research institutes conducted precisely-matching and heated discussion with nearly10 Chinese companies, which laid solid foundation for Chinese business’ transnational technology cooperation. 

 

 

During the conference, National EasternTech-Transfer CenterCanadaBranch Center was inaugurated, which will generate more opportunities for overseas tech transfer, industrial park development, Sino-Canadian cooperation in fields of innovation and tech transfer fund, R&D, related information and database, as well as mutual visits.Hence, leading technologies of various areas could be integrated onto a vast fourth-party platform in a real sense and geological barrier of tech transfer eco-chain could be broken down. 

 

 

 

Moreover, The Blue Paper on the development of Chinese Environmental Industry, through joint efforts of National Eastern Tech-Transfer Center and its sub-platform UmoreCleantech Consulting, was released and analyzed on the forum, providing professional reference for industrial development in the future.
